When I was a kid I had terrible tummy aches. Feverish, writhing pain. My terribly stoic mother always urged me to ‘get over it’ and get back to school. One of her friends made me eat Weetbix and drink peppermint tea thinking it was Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Disgusting, not to mention embarrassing to say. As it turned out I nearly died of a burst appendix, killing the talk of IBS for good. I never thought near death could be such a relief.
