Campfire poncho by Penelope Durston, RRP $198.00, from Cottage Industry (67 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, 61 3 9419 2430)
Even though her little embroidered portrait is somewhere on this splendid poncho, thoughts of Dowager Baden-Powell did not really enthral… Because I didn’t know who she was, didn’t know that she had been the World Chief Guide, inspired a Thinking Day, played a violin named Diane, grown lilies and rhubarb, and been awarded as many national honours as this poncho has patches for world-wide volunteer work. Now I am not only enthralled, I think I wanna be Lady B-P – vital, charming and generous, throwing on a poncho, and going to “stand on my head in the garden” (weeding!)…
