Melbourne
‘Scrap’ blouse by Kara Liu (POA), now on display at an exhibition by the Ex[ie]perimental Collective at Von Haus (1a Crossley St, Melbourne); 10am – 7pm, until March 28
The smaller fabric pieces that form parts of this blouse, such as the collar, have been taken from the body, leaving the windows you see at its front. It is clever and beguiling, also revealing and … a little forlorn, perhaps a reflection of human fragility, and even compensatory emotional behaviour. I’m thinking of Magda, in a Short Film by Krzysztof Kieślowski, being watched through facing windows by an infatuated younger man. Many times hurt, she decides to teach him a lesson About Love. It is not a happy story but it’s also not without its slim windows of hope.
